The John L. Street Library is offering a summer reading program for the children, teens, and adults of our community to encourage them to read for pleasure during the summer and to retain their reading skills.
This year’s theme is FIZZ BOOM READ (for children), SPARK A REACTION (for teens), and LITERARY ELEMENTS (for adults). We are planning to discover the wonders of the sciences in many ways and learn some facets of scientific principles along with other fun exploratory activities. We are combining a number of activities that will bring the wonders of science to the children of Trigg County.

To add to the fun and to create a sense of challenge that will keep kids reading, we’d like to offer incentives and contest prizes each week during the summer program. Not only do we offer these programs at the library, we also take our programs to the preschools and daycares throughout the county.
We provide the same prizes, incentives, and gifts to these children as well as those that attend the programs at the library. Plans are in the works for a “Mad Science” event for the younger group, a science themed “Minute-to-Win-It” event for the teens, and another for the adults (based on the periodic table for our ‘literary elements’). I will present programs at the two nursing homes as well as the assisted living facility and visit the children who attend the activities at the American Legion Pool.

HEY TEENS! SPARK A REACTION. PLAY MINUTE-TO-WIN-IT!
In keeping with the theme of the Summer Reading Program, the John L. Street Library is planning a science themed event for tweens and teens. We will be playing “Minute-To-Win-It” in two person teams using scientific principles (gravity, etc.) to try to win prizes based on the BIG BANG THEORY TV show.
This event will be held in the basement of the library beginning at 6:00pm on Tuesday, July 29th and conclude at approximately 8:00pm.
There will be fun, prizes and food. We’ll be having a lot of fun (and probably trying something you’ve never done before) so you don’t want to miss this event!

ADULT SUMMER READING 2014
LITERARY ELEMENTS
This year the theme for the Summer Reading Program is FIZZ BOOM READ! The adult theme is actually LITERARY ELEMENTS and in keeping with that theme we are planning a contest requiring participants to choose an element from the periodic table and create a cento (cento: a literary work made up of parts from other works) using the letters of the element (in order) as the first letter of each line of your creation.
Our contest will require a poem, ditty, saying, paragraph, witticism, WHATEVER… to be created using titles from the library. Then stack selections displaying the titles to display your creation. (See examples on the short stack displayed in the adult section.) The length will be determined by the number of letters in the name of the element you choose. Use your creative talents and put your titles together to create your ‘literary element’. Our patrons will vote on their favorite entries and the grand prize winner will receive a KINDLE 6” E Ink Display electronic e-reader. Other prizes will be awarded to additional elemental masterpieces. Only one entry is allowed per patron.
Registrations will be accepted throughout the month of June, entries will be displayed through July while voting is taking place, and the winners will be announced August 1st.
